Government of Canada

Canada helped define the 20th century rules-based trading system that championed transparency, stability and predictability, allowing billions of people to benefit from global trade. Canada recognizes that global economic prosperity can only advance if the World Trade Organization continues to play its fundamental role of ensuring that international trade flows as freely as possible. The WTO is confronting unprecedented challenges, and Canada is determined to work with WTO members to ensure the organization’s continued success.

On October 24 and 25, 2018, the Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification, will host ministers from 12 WTO members at the Ottawa Ministerial on WTO Reform. At the meeting, ministers will work to identify concrete actions to enhance and improve the WTO over the short, medium and long term.

Canada is confident that its leadership to convene like-minded countries will serve as a catalyst for change. The meeting is meant to kick-start discussions and complement other efforts to strengthen and modernize the WTO.

Driving meaningful change on how the WTO governs global trade will help members continue to access more opportunities to boost continued economic prosperity and generate benefits for all segments of society in Canada and its WTO partners.
