New trade platform in Kenya to take SMEs to global stage

Business Daily Africa

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has moved to empower Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by opening an online platform for global trade linkages.

The platform, which will connect SMEs to global product manufacturers and suppliers, is also aimed at enabling them tender for big public contracts and later access funds to meet procurement demands upon winning a contract.

Speaking in Nairobi when the KNCCI signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with a US-based trading and technology firm, Kountable, the chamber’s Chief Executive Angela Ndambuki said the new portal gives SMEs exposure and global acceptance.

“The partnership establishes a global supply chain and trade masterclass hub to help local entrepreneurs access the many opportunities the Kountable platform delivers,” she said.

The partnership will initially target SMEs dealing in supply of ICT, healthcare, industrial and energy equipment. Kountable will enable SMEs to deliver on big procurement opportunities.

Kountable founder and Chief Executive Chris Hale hailed the partnership saying verified SMEs will be able to form strong linkages directly with product manufacturers and resellers thereby enhancing their ability to meet tender requirements for supply of goods and dispensation of services to public and private entities.

“As a technology company, we will support the chamber technologically in some of its programmes to enhance their deliverability,” he said.

KNCCI and Koutanble also agreed to form a joint working committee that will mobilise resources as well as decide on which SMEs would be allocated funds to grow their businesses.

“KNCCI will also assist Kountable to access and verify data of payers and resellers and support Kountable in its expansion plan through its linkage to world chambers,” Ms Ndambuki said.

The statement said the partnership “envisions establishment of a public procurement programme” that eradicates fictitious companies formed by errant civil servants to fleece taxpayers off their hard earned cash.

Kountable also agreed to fully participate in helping SMEs tender for public contracts after which it will provide financing for those that win major procurement opportunities.

KNCCI and Kountable also agreed to deepen their collaboration to the county level thereby accessing all public tenders as they emerge. Kountable, headquartered in San Francisco, USA with corporate entities in Grand Cayman and Mauritius has additional offices in Kigali, Rwanda and in Nairobi.
