U.S. import volume of tomatoes was flat in 2017, but Canada showed strong gains.

Led by dominant supplies from Mexico but accelerating supply from Canada, volume of U.S. tomato imports was unchanged in 2017.

Value of all fresh tomato imports in 2017 totaled $2.177 billion in 2017, down 4% from 2016. Volume of total U.S. tomato imports was 1.78 million metric tons, unchanged from 2016, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics.

The USDA reported that imports from Mexico accounted for 85% of the value ($1.842 billion, down 6% from 2016) and 90% of the volume (1.612 million metric tons, unchanged from a year ago) of tomato imports.

Canada bump

Imported tomatoes from Canada were up both in volume and value. U.S. imports of Canadian tomatoes in 2017 were $312.9 million, up 13% from 2016. Volume of Canadian tomatoes shipped to the U.S. was 165,400 metric tons, up 7% from 2016. Canada represented 14% of the value and 9% of the volume of total U.S. tomato imports.

The Dominican Republic and Guatemala shipped lesser tomato volumes to the U.S., together accounting for less than 1% of total U.S. tomato imports.

Exports steady

U.S. fresh tomato exports in 2017 were unchanged in value and up 1% in volume, according to the USDA.

Exports of U.S. tomatoes pale in comparison to imports, with 2017 U.S. fresh tomato exports just 5% of total U.S. tomato imports by value and volume.

U.S. tomato exports were valued at $116.8 million in 2017, unchanged from 2016. Volume of U.S. tomato exports totaled 85,400 metric tons in 2017, up 1% from year-ago numbers.

Canada was the top destination for U.S. tomato exports, taking $107.2 million in 2017, up 1% compared with 2016. Shipments to Canada accounted for about 92% of the value of total U.S. exports. Volume shipped to Canada totaled 77,900 metric tons, down 1% from a year ago and accounting for 91% of the volume of U.S. fresh tomato exports.
