New Canadian Terminal to Compete with Major US Ports

The Québec Port Authority (QPA), an autonomous federal agency in Québec, Canada, has announced that it will invest in a $400 million project to build a new container terminal at the Port of Québec with the view to compete with US ports and leverage its location on the St. Lawrence–Great Lakes Trade Corridor.

QPA announced the proposal on December 12, 2017.

The construction of the new container terminal has the potential to boost the economy of the Québec City area and across the St. Lawrence by leveraging Québec’s proximity to the big St. Lawrence–Great Lakes market in the US, with its over $US 110 million consumers.

The ships that currently pass through the Port of Quebec are central to a supply chain that transports approximately $US 20 billion in goods each year.

The Beauport container terminal project will deliver:

•    610-meter extension of the wharf line

•    Development of 17-hectare area behind the wharf

•    Link-up with existing rail and road networks

The port will leverage its strategic geographic location on the shortest route between Europe and the St. Lawrence–Great Lakes region, which is home to over 40% of the US manufacturing industry.

In a speech to the Québec City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mario Girard, Port President and CEO pointed out that the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2016 and the emergence of next-generation ships requiring deep-water ports has made it harder for St. Lawrence, as it currently stands, to compete with US container ports.

He highlighted that the Port of Québec has a distinctive advantage in the St. Lawrence–Great Lakes Trade Corridor and is well suited for the project as it has a water depth of 15 meters and full intermodality.

Girard said: “We’ve got a tremendous opportunity here and we have all we need to succeed.”

“Our vision is simple and strategic: make Québec City a hub for maritime logistics on the continent.

“We’ll succeed by rallying around this promising project.”

Régis Labeaume, Mayor, Québec City, commented: “The governments of Québec and Canada must offer their unmitigated support for the project so that Québec and Eastern Canada can compete with big US ports and to make the Port of Québec Europe’s gateway to trade in North America.”
