Alma Farias, TFO Canada Regional Representative, of Oakville, Ontario, is the recipient of the 2014 JoAnna Townsend Excellence Award for Leadership in International Trade.
The JoAnna Townsend Excellence Award recognizes an outstanding woman in Ontario who, through her business and personal networks, acts as a trade advocate and mentor for women, fostering opportunities that actively support women entrepreneurs or professionals to achieve success in international business. The award is bestowed by the Organization of Women in International Trade.
Ms. Farias, who emigrated to Canada from Monterrey, Mexico said, “I am greatly humbled and honored to be a winner of the JoAnna Townsend Excellence Award this year. I am grateful especially knowing that I work every day with extraordinary women who are equally deserving. My sincerest gratitude to the OWIT board of directors and the judges.”
Ms. Farias’ passion is the promotion of trade between Canada and the Global South, she dedicated this award to all women in Canada and abroad who work hard every day to make people’s lives better.
Alma Farias has been an advocate for and international trade liaison for small- and medium-sized businesses for almost 18 years. During that time, she has assisted hundreds of exporters and importers in Canada, Mexico, and developing countries around the world.
“For me, this award is very exciting because it acknowledges the work I do, as representative for the TFO Canada,” she added.
TFO Canada confronts the challenge of global poverty by promoting sustainable economic development through export information, advice and contact. TFO Canada facilitates access to the Canadian marketplace and shares Canadian trade expertise for the benefit of smaller exporters in developing countries. Founded in 1980, TFO Canada is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation.
“When everyone talks about a global economy, that is my world. I’m on the frontlines, helping companies—and especially women—to open doors to international trade through the TFO Canada,” said Ms. Farias.
Through her company, Trade Partners, and consultation work at BDC, Ms. Farias also assists Canadian companies to export their goods and services globally by identifying key business partners and projects in Canada and Latin America. She provides customized assistance across a wide range of industries that includes auto parts, manufacturing, telecommunications, agrifood, consumer products and many others. Ms. Farias has developed key government, associations and investor relations, as well as international sales and supply networks in the Americas. She also has organized many international delegations, conferences and trade missions in Canada and Latin America.
The Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT) is an international, non-profit professional organization, with chapters around the world, dedicated to advancing global trade opportunities for women.
