One-stop border post huge relief to traders in regionWednesday, March 07, 2018 > 09:51:11
The recently launched Busia One-Stop-Border Post is the remedy that traders who cross the border to buy or sell their merchandise have been longing for to ease the pain that cross-border trade has been suffering.
For years, it was an uphill task for traders to move their goods from Kenya to Uganda or vice-versa due to the many bottlenecks that impeded smooth flow of goods and people.
The traders would undergo the same scrutiny at both sides, a repetitive process occasioned by long delays. Consequently, cross-border trade was severely hurt.
With faster clearance of goods and people, cross-border trade will, definitely, have a fertile ground to flourish on.
That will also mean higher revenues for Kenya and Uganda.
The facility will unblock the many barriers that have been impeding effective trading in the East African bloc as a whole.
The cooperation between Kenya and Uganda will also put at bay criminals who hide in either country, now that the two have an opportunity to share security intelligence.
The OSPB becomes the second major project the two countries have launched to enhance trade. Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, had earlier launched an ambitious cargo tracking technology project that has so far offered solutions to the many challenges agencies faced when tracking of transit cargo was done independently.
