Canada: Kingsville company fined $1.5M for misrepresenting products' country of originThursday, June 09, 2016 > 12:25:31
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency fined a Kingsville company $1.5 million for misrepresenting where some of its products came from.
The eight charges against Mucci International Marketing Inc. involve the fraudulent misrepresentation of "country of origin" for greenhouse peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers over a 15-month period.
The CFIA says the vegetables were labeled as "Product of Canada," when in fact, they were imported.
Danny Mucci and Joseph Spano pleaded guilty to the offences under the Food and Drugs Act, the Canada Agricultural Products Act and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act.
In addition to the fine, the company will be under probation for three years.
