Kenya is set to host the 14th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) later this year.
UNCTAD Secretary General Dr.Mukhisa Kituyi revealed that more than 7, 000 delegates including Heads of States; ministers; mayors of major cities; entrepreneurs; youth; and some of the biggest investors from around the world will attend the conference.
He said it will consist of a ministerial conference, a youth forum and the 4th World Investment Forum.
Kituyi also announced that UNCTAD will put up a centre to train and guide women entrepreneurs in support of the government’s capacity building for women in business.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said that UNCTAD’s initiative will be linked with the Uwezo Fund to ensure women who take up government funds have the capacity to run their business ventures.
UNCTAD is a forum where representatives from its 194 member states can freely engage in dialogue on ways to establish a better balance in the global economy.
The United Nations body holds a ministerial-level meeting every four years to discuss major global economic issues and decide on the programme of its international trade development work.
Every two years, UNCTAD brings together major players from the international investment community to discuss opportunities and challenges; and to promote investment policies and partnerships for sustainable development and equitable growth at the World Investment Forum.
UNCTAD also gives developing countries and countries with economies in transition, direct technical assistance to help them to build capacity to improve the well-being of their populations and become equitably integrated into the global economy.
UNCTAD 14 will be held in Nairobi between 17th and 22nd July 2016.
The conference is a subsidiary organ of the United Nations General Assembly.
