Traditional local designs that reflect Indonesia's culture are the main theme of this year's Indonesian Fashion Week (IFW), slated to be held March 10-13 at the Jakarta Convention Center in Central Jakarta.
Over 180 catwalk models exhibiting more than 1,700 fashion outfits, seven choreographers and six music directors will be presented at the annual event, alongside prominent participating designers such as Samuel Wattimena, Chossy Latu, Itang Yunasz, Zaskia Sungkar, Poppy Dharsono, Ivan Gunawan and Stephanus Hamy.
Noted designer Poppy told a press conference on Wednesday that IFW always based itself on Indonesian heritage, so that boosting the value of the archipelago's creative products, especially in the fashion industry.
“The event aims to make Indonesia the reference center for fashioncraft and world Muslim fashion,” said Poppy.
In addition to fashion shows, IFW will also feature discussions, workshops, a fashion design competition and up to 487 fashion booths consisting of menswear, shoes, kidswear, cocktail and evening dresses, casual ethnic garments, jewelry, bags and textiles.
“We treat Indonesia Fashion Week as a trade show, not a cultural show," said senior designer and event coordinator Musa Widyatmodjo.
This year's Young Fashion Designer Competition will see 15 finalists competing in creating ready-to-wear designs; the winners will have the opportunity to showcase their works at a special show.
IFW is looking to attract 120 million visitors and Rp 85 billion (US$6.41 million) in transactions over the course of the four-day event.
