The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Wednesday said African countries export just 0.3 per cent of the world’s high-tech products.
The Director of UNCTAD in Lagos, Mr Ronald Kayanja, made this known at the presentation of the Technology and Innovation Report 2015, entitled: “Promoting Innovation Policies for Industrial Development in Africa”.
The presentation was held at the Federal Institute for Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) in Lagos.
According to Kayanja, the report examines how African governments can better implement science, technology and innovation policies and coordinate them with industrial policies and development plans.
He said that technology and innovation role in economic development could be harnessed, if innovation policies were coherently linked to countries’ industrial goals.
“Although, developing countries as a whole, accounted for 52 per cent of global exports of high technology products in 2014 which is an18 percentage rice since over 2000, African countries are lagging behind, representing just 0.3 per cent of the total,” he said.
