Brazil Becomes World抯 Third Largest Export of Agricultural ProductsWednesday, March 10, 2010 > 16:03:48
Brazil has overtaken Canada to become the third largest world exporter of agricultural products, behind the United States and the European Union (EU); according to a report from the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
In 2000 Brazil was the world’s sixth biggest agricultural exporter, but it has overtaken Australia and China in the last 10 years, the WTO said. The survey showed that in 2008, Brazilian exports of agri-livestock products totalled US$61.4 billion, which exceeded Canadian exports of US$54 billion.
In 2007, Canadian producers were slightly ahead with US$48.7 billion, as compared to Brazil’s US$48.3 billion.
Between 2000 and 2008, Brazil’s agricultural exports rose 18.6% on average per year, ahead of Canada’s 6.3% growth, Australia’s 6%, 8.4% for the U.S. and 11.4% for the EU.
Amongst the factors contributing to that rise were abundant natural resources (land, water and sunlight), product diversity, growth of land productivity and Asian consumption.
