The Ministry of Trade announced that Ethiopia in collaboration with International Coffee Organization (ICO) will host the 4th International Coffee Conference March 6-11, 2016.
The conference is expected to bring together 1,200-1,500 participants drawn from ICO member countries and local participants engaged in coffee production, export, buyers, coffee researchers and other stakeholders.
Ministry Trade Export and Expansion Director Asefa Mulgeta told a press conference yesterday that Ethiopia was chosen by ICO as a host country after intense competition with countries like Italy, Columbia and other African countries who have showed interest to host the conference.
He also said that preparation is well underway to effectively host the conference in the coming March. The conference is aimed at creating international consensus among all stakeholders engaged in coffee industry.
It is also a big inspiration for Ethiopian coffee producers and exporters. The conference will create an opportunity to build the country's image and create international market link, he added.
Ethiopian Coffee Exporters Association Public Relations Head Getachewu Admasu on his part said: "The conference is a great opportunity to promote Ethiopian coffee to the world. Besides, it makes Ethiopia the first country to host international coffee conference in Africa."
Coffee is the leading export commodity in Ethiopia. Ethiopia stands as the biggest coffee producer and exporter in Africa and amongst the leading in the world. Coffee provides a means of livelihood for millions of people, and plays a vital role in their socio-economic and cultural values.
