Peru: Alpaca fiber exports amount to US$ 21 millionWednesday, July 08, 2015 > 08:51:51

Increased support and investments are to thank for the increase in alpaca production.
Peruvian alpaca exports totaled US$ 21,518,000 from January to April of this year so far, reports Andina news agency.
The volume exported was recorded at 1,305 tons of alpaca fiber, representing an increase compared to the same period last year at 1,292 tons valued at US$ 18 million.
The increase in exports could be due to the increase in support for the industry. Sierra Exportadora provided support to the “Tambo Inca Alpaca Breeders Organization” based in the Apurimac region. They signed a trade agreement with “Consorcio Alpaquero Peru Export Juliaca.” This agreement led to providing 120 cwt of white huancayo-blanco fiber.
The main market for Peruvian alpaca is Italy. The shipments to Europe totaled US$ 8.3 million, to China US$ 7.5 million and to South Korea US$ 2.7 million.
The organization is made up of 40 alpaca breeders from Cotaruse district, belonging to the Aymaraes province. They take care of breeding alpacas and collecting fiber, according to Andina.
As the trade in fibers of the animal increase, the popularity of the animal will be more widespread. Perhaps it will bring with it, the custom of consuming the alpaca meat.
