The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and TFO Canada have signed a general agreement on technical cooperation to enhance agro-export capacity of SMEs from Latin America and the Caribbean. The agreement anticipates that TFO and IICA will undertake a number of joint activities including:
The provision of Canadian market access services (seminars and trade missions) for agro-food producers in the Americas
The co-development of an America Agro-food SME exporter training program
Partnering between TFO and local (national) IICA offices for TFO’s CIDA funded programs.
TFO and IICA jointly undertook training seminars on the Canadian market for agro-producers in Guyana as part of TFO’s ongoing CIDA-funded export development program for Guyana the last week of October. Over the course of the next couple months IICA and TFO will begin offering a package of Canadian market access services for all IICA member states through their local offices and partners. And early in 2010 TFO and IICA expect to begin course development work on a new agro-food exporter training program.
During 2007 and 2008 TFO Canada and IICA successfully cooperated, in Honduras and Haiti, on activities designed to contribute towards export awareness and capacity building and market access to Canada including linkages with buyers and ultimately new sales and business expansion for Honduran and Haitian agro-exporters.
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture is a specialized agency of the Inter-American System. Its purpose is to provide technical support to its member states to achieve agricultural development and increasing well-being for rural populations. Through the Inter-American Program for the Promotion of Trade, Agribusiness and Food Safety, based in Miami, IICA supports small and medium sized agribusinesses of the Americas strengthening their export capacities, identifying market opportunities and providing information for decision making.
