A new EUR32 million cargo terminal at the Addis Ababa airport in Ethiopia will allow Ethiopian Airlines to boost handling by 500 per cent to 600,000 tonnes of fresh and dry goods per year, making it the largest trans-shipment facility in Africa.
The new terminal, built by Unitechnik, will be about five soccer fields in size and include a refrigerated and dry storage area.
A further expansion of the terminal to permit handling of 1.2 million tonnes per year is part of the plan.
The new terminal is divided into two different and separate temperature-controlled zones designed to meet the storage requirements of different items. The zones are largely identical in structure, with automatic high-bay racking stores for unit load devices (ULDs).
