Vancouver: Health and wellness, fresh are highlighted at Grocery & Specialty Food West

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 > 11:18:03

(Canadian Grocer)

The Grocery & Specialty Food Show takes place at the Vancouver Convention Centre East April 13, 14

With an increasing focus on health by today’s consumers, Grocery & Specialty Food West will provide some key sessions to help drive retailers’ business.

To kick start the event, there’s a super retailer panel on Monday, April 13. Want to know how some of the top retailers market and sell health and fresh? Don’t miss the panel discussion with leaders in fresh: Joe Longo of Longo’s, Pete Luckett of Pete’s, and Craig Hermanson, of Pomme Natural Market.

The two-day annual western grocery show and conference will feature concurrent morning workshops. On Tuesday, April 14, Choices Markets’ registered dietitian and nutrition operations manager, Nicole Fetterly, will showcase how registered dietitians are leading the way in selling health and driving sales.

Also, Maple Leaf Foods’ director, joint business planning, Nola Martin, will highlight the growth of home meal replacements (HMR) and how grocers can get the most out of their programs by tapping into today’s customers and trends. The HMR market is estimated to be a $2.4 billion opportunity for grocers. The market for a piece of the HMR pie is increasingly competitive. In the U.S., for the first time, this past January, sales at restaurants ($50.475 billion) surpassed those at grocery stores ($50.466 billion), according to the American Enterprise Institute.

On the trade floor, there are several new pavilions highlighting growing categories: the Local Pavilion and the Specialty Food Pavilion. As well, innovative products will be featured in the New Product Showcase. As a bonus, companies in this showcase get a chance to be voted among the Top 10 Most Innovative Products at the show.

The Grocery & Specialty Food West show is an opportunity for food manufacturers to get directly in front of Canada’s independent and franchise grocers. Independents account for more than $13 billion of the grocery market share in Canada.
