TFO Canada regrets to announce the passing of a former Executive Director
It is with deep regret that we have learned that one of TFO Canada’s former Executive Directors, Robert (Bob) Gayner passed away on June 8th, 2009 at the age of 79. Bob was the Executive Director from 1990 until 1996 when he retired. Prior to joining TFO Bob had a distinguished career with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade).
As Executive Director of what was then known as TFOC, Bob Gayner had a major impact on the present-day TFO. In the early 1990s, he initiated - and guided - a major re-direction of the organisation, as it transitioned from a fully-funded government agency, located in CIDA, to its present status as an independent NGO. The early success of that daunting challenge was due to Bob's perseverance - fortunately aided by an unequalled list of government and industry contacts, and long experience in dealing in those areas - and bolstered by an unfailing optimism and faith. Amongst other significant changes, Bob secured a major trade assistance program in central and Eastern Europe, which developed a base of new training and aid programs that have been carried into other developing regions of the globe and are reflected in the trade capacity building services that TFO Canada delivers today.
