Indonesia Records $190 Million Trade Surplus in Dec Vs. $426 Million Deficit NovTuesday, February 03, 2015 > 11:06:18
Indonesia--Indonesia booked a $190 million trade surplus in December, swinging from a $426 million deficit in November thanks to higher exports, the official statistics agency said Monday.
The agency said exports rose 7.4% to $14.662 billion in December from November, due to increased demand for Indonesian commodities such as crude palm oil and coal.
Imports gained 2.8% to $14.43 billion from a month earlier, but shrank 6.6% from December 2013.
The median forecast of 11 regional economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires was for a surplus of $200 million.
Economists said Indonesian exports remain weak and could slide in the coming months amid an uncertain economic recovery in China, Indonesia's single largest export market. This would warrant a prolonged tight monetary stance to help reduce the sizable current account deficit, they said.
