Kenya to host World Trade Organization conferenceThursday, December 11, 2014 > 09:06:45
Kenya will host the World Trade Organization's next ministerial conference after Turkey withdrew its bid to hold the meeting in Istanbul, a senior official said Tuesday.
Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization, Ambassador Mehmet Haluk Ilıcak, said: "Turkey stepped down in favor of Kenya."
He said the decision was made after consultations with Kenyan Trade Minister Amina Mohamed.
"Amina Mohamed emphasized that holding the conference in Kenya would create an important opportunity to underline the importance of trade in the African continent,” Ilıcak said.
“Turkey supports active participation of African countries in the multilateral trading system,” the ambassador said.
“Kenya is Turkey’s important partner in the continent where both country work together,” he added.
The tenth World Trade Organization’s ministerial conference is scheduled in December 2015.
