Sharp angles and sleek cuts are among the edgy designs at this year’s Jakarta Fashion Week. The event brings together some of the country’s top designers and is currently the largest in Southeast Asia.
Some designers have displayed lines that make use of traditional batik textiles, while others are using the stage to show off their latest Muslim wear collections.
It is the seventh time Jakarta has hosted the fashion extravaganza, and this year’s theme is “Setting Fashion Future.”
Dalyanta Sembiring, who handles promotions for Jakarta Fashion Week, said the theme reflects the hope that Indonesian designers can some day take the lead in the global fashion world.
Based on data from the Trade Ministry, $11.78 billion of Indonesia’s total exports in 2013 came from the country’s fashion industry. The United States, Japan, and South Africa are among it’s biggest export markets.
Mr. Sembiring said Jakarta Fashion Week provided the opportunity for designers, buyers and manufacturers to meet and discuss ways to move the country’s fashion industry forward.
Jakarta Fashion Week will run until Nov. 7 and feature more than 200 local and international designers in total, including Indonesia’s Oscar Lawalata and Dian Pelangi, who has gained attention for her unique Muslim wear collection.
