The proposal made in the 2015 Budget to set up an International Gem Trade Centre in Sri Lanka is a major victory achieved by tens of thousands of persons engaged in the gem and jewellery trade in the country, National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said.
The minister said this trade centre set up on a proposal made by him, will enable large and small scale gem traders in Sri Lanka to obtain the highest price for their products by meeting world renowned gem traders directly without the aid of any middlemen.
Participating in a debate on Budget 2015 in Ratnapura recently, Nanayakkara said the Colombo-Pelmadulla Expressway and rail road to be built within the next two years under the massive infrastructure development program envisaged in the Budget would be a great a boon to the people in Sabaragamuwa.
The guaranteed price for latex announced in the Budget will help protect the sagging rubber industry, he said.
