Minister Silva reassures that Peru maintains the title as second largest avocado exporter.
In a November 3 press release, Magali Silva, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), and acting President of Promperú, was proud to note that an expanded trade market has led to increased growth for Peruvian Hass avocados.
During the 2014 time period between January and August, exports of the creamy fruit earned US$ 298 million, representing a 67.5% growth compared to last year’s figures.
The minister credited such success to the National Service of Agrarian Health (SENASA) which has opened trade with countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Argentina and Australia.
Such success has also allowed for the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass), formed in 1999, to grow from 12 members to 74. Prohass represents 18,000 hectares.
Falling second in avocado exports only to Mexisco, Peru will host the World Avocado Congress, scheduled for September 2015.
