WTO - Fourth Trade Policy Review for Mauritius

(All Africa)

The fourth Trade Policy Review of Mauritius will be held at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva from 22 to 24 October 2014, when the country's trade policies and practices will be examined. The Mauritian delegation is led by the Acting Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mrs Usha Dwarka-Canabady.

The review is a mandatory exercise to encourage members of the WTO to be transparent in the formulation and implementation of trade policies and to ensure that they are in compliance with their obligations to the WTO. For each review, two reports are prepared: a policy statement by the Government under review, and a detailed report written independently by the WTO Secretariat.

The reports analyse in detail developments that have taken place in Mauritius since the last Trade Policy Review and the compliance of our economic and trade policies with our WTO commitments.

The report prepared by Government focuses on the continuation of the reform program which started in 2006, measures taken by Government to navigate through the global financial and economic crisis and the new poles of growth being developed to diversify and strengthened the economic base as we transition towards a high income country.

These reports will be available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade's website (http://foreign.gov.mu) after the review on 25 October 2014.

WTO members have two weeks prior to the review to submit written questions on the reports, while oral questions may be submitted during the review itself. So far some 50 questions have been received from the EU, US, Brazil, China, Canada, Peru and Thailand.

The frequency of the Trade Policy Reviews depends on the country's size: six years for developed countries, with the possibility of a longer interim period for the least-developed countries.

It is recalled that the third Trade Policy Review of Mauritius was held in April 2008.
