Montreal (Port) Raises TariffsTuesday, November 11, 2008 > 12:57:50
The Port of Montreal has given notice that it is raising its tariffs by 5% as of January 1.
Electricity service charges, however, remain unchanged unless the provincial provider, Hydro-Quebec, modifies its own tariffs in 2009, the Montreal Port Authority said. The tariff increase is to cover costs for safety and security and for environmental programs.
Under the present tariff regime, the Port of Montreal is doing well in difficult times. Container traffic in the January-September period totaled 1,116,764 TEUs, a 9.9% rise from 1,016,197 TEUs in the 2007 period. Tonnage increased 10.1% to 10.2 million metric tons for the first nine months of this year. Overall cargo totaled 20 million tons through September, up 4.5% year-to-date.
