West Africa: ECOWAS Calls for Creation of Gender, Trade Research Centres

Thursday, July 10, 2014 > 08:52:21

(All Africa)

ECONOMIC Community of West African States (ECOWAS) stakeholders have called for the setting up of centres to mainstream gender in trade in the region.

They proposed the establishment of a gender and trade development research centre and a database on gender and cross-border trade in each of the 15 ECOWAS Member States.

Stakeholders made the call at the end of a regional workshop the ECOWAS Department for Social Affairs and Gender, organised in conjunction with the Trade Directorate in Abuja.

The workshop also considered the role of men and women in trade in West Africa building on the draft ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Trade.

The event adopted a monitoring and evaluation framework aimed at facilitating the implementation of the ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Trade 2015-2020.

The Action Plan provides the situation of trade in the region, its evolution, changes and impact, as well as the trade policies of each country and the way the policies affect the behaviour of men and women.

The document dwells mainly on women in cross-border trade, trade policies and liberalization and the role of women in exports competitiveness with reports of various ECOWAS experts' meetings on the issues.

It also sets out priority actions on gender-sensitive trade policies and regulations, such as training and capacity building of women traders and their rights as well as the mainstreaming of gender into trade policies and all aspects of trade negotiation processes.
