THE Kisumu government plans to export food to boost its revenue collection. Governor Jack Ranguma said the county is keen on transforming itself from a consumer economy to a leading exporter in the 2014-15 financial year.
He said Kisumu has the potential to raise Sh3.5 billion every year from parking fees, land rates, business permits and market levies but the county barely raises Sh520 million each year due to fraud. Ranguma told the Star yesterday that Kisumu will begin exporting meat and farm produce to regional markets. "We have so much potential that if tapped can uplift residents," he said.
The governor said the county has distributed sorghum to farmers in Nyando for planting to subsidise rice farming. Ranguma said most farms lie idle after rice is harvested during the December and January period leading to food insecurity. The governor said nearly all food consumed in Kisumu is bought from neighbouring counties
