Description

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) together with the Boat Building Technology Institute (GTE) Ltd. (BTI) will organize the “Boat Show Sri Lanka 2010” to be held from 24th to 26th April 2010 at the Bandaranayke Conventional Center for the second consecutive year, with a view  to develop & promote the boat building industry of Sri Lanka.

The EDB has identified the Boat Building Sector as an industry with high potential for exports and employment generation. In spite of the adverse effects of the economic crisis, the sector has been able to record an increase from US$21.54Mn. in 2008 to US$38.56Mn. in 2009(Jan– Sep.).

The Boat Show Sri Lanka 2008, the first ever “Boat Show” opened up a new frontier of leisure boating, marine, industrial and commercial vessels where leading boat manufactures were able to secure definite orders which are being currently executed.

The intention of organizing such an event is to provide a forum for all the related business sectors involved directly and indirectly with the boat building industry to display and promote their respective sectors to potential clients. A definite focus will be made to promote the industry in the international market by attracting buyer from allover the Globe and develop a forum between them and the sellers. The Hotel trade too is expected to benefit by this type of a show since the latest water sports methods and water related activities will be displayed by leading international and local traders.

The products and services on display at the exhibition includes raw material, engines, interior fixtures, fittings, electrical and electronic devises, navigation equipments, on board safety equipments, credit insurance, providers of services to the industry such as marketing and export facilitation, repairs to boat hull, engines and other equipment and training providers in boat building, navigation and seaman training. Leading boat manufactures of both local and foreign markets have already shown interest in participating in the boat show 2010. It is expected that there will be around 150 exhibitors displaying their products.

For the past 30 years this industry was working in an environment where 2/3 of the coastal belt with virgin beaches were inaccessible, and restrictions on use of high powered engines in boats specially leisure and pleasure crafts. The barriers to the growth of this industry are slowly but steadily diminishing. This indeed is a very good sign for not only the existing entrepreneurs of boating industry but also for the new comers to invest in the industry and secure a good future for the industry.

A trend is evolving in the western boat market to turn towards developing countries to manufacture fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) popularly know as Fiberglass, especially for hull construction. This is mainly due to the cost saving factor of manufacturing in developing countries.

The EDB together with the BTI propose to undertake an aggressive promotional campaign to promote the Boat Show 2010, in identified markets.

Considering the importance of developing and promoting the Sri Lanka boat building industry, we would very much appreciate the assistance of the Sri Lanka High Commission in promoting the Boat Show Sri Lanka 2010 among the potential buyers, investors, suppliers of services of the boating industry and convincing potential buyers to visit the Boat Show in Sri Lanka in April 2010.
