Description

Footwear & Leather Fair 2009
Colombo - Sri Lanka

The Fair is expected to consist of approximately 150 trade stalls, displaying not only footwear and leather products but also travel goods, raw material, machinery, components and other related services.

The primary objective behind the venture is to achieve international recognition of the local industry.  It also seeks to acknowledge the SME manufacturers of the sector and help them build linkages with large scale manufacturers. This would give  industrialists an opportunity to recognize the available potential.

"All  manufacturers, SMEs,  large scale producers and those who engage in this as a cottage industry have the opportunity to take part in the event. With the measures taken by this government and those before, the environment has become more conducive. We are on par with our competitors from India, China and Thailand," the President, Small and Medium Footwear and Leather Goods Manufacturers Association, S.A. Sirisena told Daily FT.  "The EDB has made arrangements to invite buyer delegations from Italy, France, UK and Germany."

Sri Lankan's footwear exporters have already established themselves as suppliers of fashion footwear to well-known international brands, such as Marks and Spencer, Bata France, H.H. Browns, Clarks, Aerosoles, Nike. "This event would also promote the SME and cottage industry sector, as most of the delicate work such as wedding shoes is done by them for mainstream companies," said Mr. Sirisena.
